Selling your used car is difficult if you want to get the best value, it certainly isn't something to be rushed. The trick with selling a car is to find someone who wants the car you are selling. It may be that you can find someone who wants to buy the exact car you have available and if it is rare at all then you can charge them much more than you could if it was a very common car available from a variety of places or someone just after a car in general and not too fussed about exactly what they go for.

If you are selling to a dealership then they have a much better chance of finding the right person for a car so if you need a quick sale you may well get the best price by going to a few dealers to see what you get offered. They won't pay much though for something they will struggle to shift. Dealerships have finite space so they want to make the most money they can by selling cars as often as they can.

You may get more for your used car though if you trade it in when buying another one. Don't assume it is the case but often dealerships will offer you a much better deal than you could get elsewhere to ensure you buy a new or newer car from them. Somehow the amount extra they offer you for your old car seems more than the same amount of the car you are buying, perhaps because it is relatively a higher percentage; $750 rather than $500 for a old car seems very generous while $250 off of a $20,000 car seems a drop in the ocean so think about the value of the deal you are getting overall.

If you have a car that is old but in good condition you may get a good deal at a dealership too, they will be able to tell though and give you a price accordingly. Make sure though they don't convince you that your car has issues that it doesn't though it can be hard for you to tell. If there are some issues with your car though you may get a better price thorough a private sale.

Selling privately a lot of people will have no clue what they are looking at, so may miss engines that don't sound quite right or brake pedals with a lot of travel. With a private sale it is true to some extent that a person will have no come back, it is accepted that with a private car sale you are selling as seen, you may want to mention this though and mention you make no warranties to a car's condition. Remember though that if you knowingly sell a car that is dangerous you could end up in very serious trouble if someone is injured or worse as a result. It may be best to have simple problems with a car fixed and a service done, being able to say that it has had the work done recently will often add more than enough value to cover your costs.
