Buying a used car has some inherent risks, this is perhaps why some people pay a hefty premium for a new car with a long warranty and no pre existing issues. Buying a used car you can never be completely sure of what problems exist: these include the history of the car which may have been in an accident or stolen as well as the mechanics of it.
Buying a vehicle privately is often the cheapest, as for whether it is the best value this depends on how much risk you are happy to take. A used car dealership may offer warranties and may offer checks on the history of a car as well. You can though when buying privately do some of your own checks. Checking the history of a car is fairly simple as well though not 100% trustworthy, especially if it has been in any unreported accidents. Taking a car for a test drive though and checking how it sounds how it steers and how the brakes are, are simple checks you may want to do.
Used car dealerships vary greatly, some are little more than cars being sold privately but from a forecourt with more choice. It may be the service you get and the extras such as warranties are just what you would get from a private sale, a private sale may still be cheaper of course. Mind you sometimes very basic car dealerships are just looking to get cars sold as quickly as possible to make space for more: a private seller by contrast may be more willing to wait around for the right price so don't assume that a dealership will be more expensive.
Even large and more professional dealerships often have great deals, it may be a deal to get people in so they can then be sold something else: but if the deal suits you then go for it. A professional dealership may have a great range of facilities and extras that mean a lot to some people. Being able to have a used car with a warranty may be worth a lot to some people, to others they would rather pay less and take their chances. If you do go for a warranty though check what is and isn't included, often tires, exhausts and entertainment systems are excluded.
The service a dealership may offer before selling you a car is another consideration, make sure it is thorough and look at what is actually done and whether faults will be rectified at no extra cost.
Lastly you may want to choose a dealership based on its ability to offer finance, some offer instant finance, finance for people with poor credit and finance with zero cash down. All these may be exactly what you are after, if not then somewhere else may simply offer cheaper finance with a lower interest rate. If you are not in a hurry this may be ideal, if you get instant acceptance often rates will be higher to cover the higher risk of not having done as many checks. If you have nothing to hide and a good credit rating you may be willing to wait a day or so. Also if you can put some cash down or trade in another vehicle expect to get a much better interest rate, again you are lowering the risk to the finance company.
